The scientific name of the 3-layer Lucky Bamboo is Dracaena Braunii. It belongs to the plant species of genus Dracaena, better known as Dracaena Sanderiana.

It is known by various other names as well. Lucky Bamboo, Friendship Bamboo, Curly Bamboo, Chinese Water Bamboo, Belgian Evergreen are some of them.

Although most of its name has the word 'bamboo' in it, yet it has a completely different taxonomic order from original bamboos.

The nickname of the plant may suggest that it has its origin in China or Belgium. On the contrary, this plant is held native to African states.

Basic Care:

It is a common indoor plant in most parts of the world, especially in India, China, and Taiwan. The reason for its popularity is that it can be easily taken care of.

Lucky Bamboo is a low maintenance indoor plant. Even in a poor lighting condition and adverse situation, it can grow without any hindrance.

Soil:

To grow a lucky bamboo, the soil must be mildly acidic to neutral in nature.

As an indoor plant, it is generally planted in decorative pots with a proper amount of soil in it.

Watering:

The water used for watering this plant should be soft water and not hard water. Water should be fresh, clean and filtered.

Use of filtered water helps the plant grow. Excess minerals present in unfiltered water can damage the plant and turn it to yellow and brown.

The level of water sittings at the bottom of the stalks should be at least one inch above the ground, not less than that.

Lighting:

During the period of growth, this plant needs bright but indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight can cause the leaves to burn.

It is essential to keep the plant in a proper place, where it has adequate sunlight and shade, in a balanced form.

Humidity:

The soil used for the plant should be kept moderately moist. Therefore, the humidity required for the proper growth of this plant is moderate humidity.

High humidity can hinder the process of growth, while low humidity can make the leaves turn brown. Moderate humidity is favourable.

Fertilization:

A Lucky Bamboo can survive even without any fertilization if it is grown in pure soft water.

However, a diluted Organic plant fertilizer can be used once in a couple of months to ensure speedy growth.

Growth:

Generally, this plant grows no more than 24 inches to 36 inches. It has three different layers of growth, as suggested by its name.

Flowers can be seen, if the growth is proper. The flowers of this plant are pale, yellow or cream in colour when it blooms.

Benefits:

According to the Chinese Feng Shui, the Lucky Bamboo brings happiness and prosperity, wherever it is planted. It is believed to bring health and wealth in abundance.

This is the reason behind the Lucky Bamboo being one of the most popular houseplants in most parts of the Indian Subcontinent, China and Taiwan.
