Allamanda is a common name for varieties of Allamanda. Among these Allamanda Cathartica is common and is also called as a golden trumpet. This plant blooms a bright yellow flower that is colourful and can go up to 3-4 inches. It can be grown indoor and as well outdoors. This plant is not suited for areas which are cold.
Allamanda is low maintenance plant which needs lots of sunlight and normal water supply for its growth. It needs cutting if grown in indoors or else it will take over a large amount of space. It needs warmth to bloom and to maintain the flowers.
Watering is normally done for alternative days other than the winter season. During winter don't water it often but don't let it dry.
Heavy water and less water can damage the plant and let it shed its leaves. To avoid this follow a pattern in winter and another pattern in other seasons.
During blooming season, it needs lots of water and make sure to take care of water requirement for better blooming.
Plant it in a good peat based potting soil to get better results. It can be propagated by stem cutting and after early stage, it can be re-planted in other soil.
It needs a lot of lighting and warmth during its period of growth and also for flowering. So try to place it in direct sunlight and it can adapt itself to it.
The best way is to place it in an east side window so that it gets the morning sunlight which is essential for its growth.
The plant blooms only when the sunlight is enough and warmth is adequate. It blooms a bright yellow colour flower which can last for weeks.
When allowed to grow large enough, it can produce flowers that are 3-4 inches large and it also gives an intoxicating smell that fills the room.
This plant can grow up to a spread of 3-5 meters and can grow up to 50-100 meters if provided with a support. Since this plant is a creeper, it needs support for growing.
Use a weak liquid fertilizer for every month for better growth of the plant. Make sure to not use fertilizer during the winter season.
Use of excess fertilizer may lead the plant to overcrowd and foliage so make use of the fertilizer properly.
Make sure that the plant has a good drainage system so that the water does not stay stagnant in the pot.
Remove the dead flowers to make the plant bloom again as removing dead plants on the plant may make the plant not to bloom.
