Allspice also called pimento, Jamaica pimento and myrtle pepper is native to Jamaica and its surroundings. But is found in Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras and its climatic conditions are suitable for its growth, fruiting, and flowering. It is assumed that some of the migrating birds have carried the seeds from the Caribbean which led to growth in central America.
It does need maintenance because it does not grow well in sunlight and needs cold temperature. This plant is dioecious which means it needs both male and female plant to produce fruit.
Watering this plant is normal and while at an early stage, it needs more care as the soil should not dry and the water level has to be carefully maintained.
It grows best in garden soil but can be grown in any soil. During the early stage, it only grows in garden soil and after it has grown to 30 centimeters, it can be replanted to other soil.
It should be planted in soil whose pH value should be in the range of 6.8 – 7.2.
Lighting the plant should be a tedious process and the plant should not be exposed to daylight.
The plant should be grown only in shades and once it is fully grown, it can withstand a temperature of about 26o Celsius.
The height of the fully grown plant may exceed 5 meters and the spread can go above 6 meters.
This plant needs large area but it can be grown in a pot and then replanted to an area with large space to grow.
This plant cannot produce fruits other than its native area as the climatic conditions vary in other places.
As this plant needs lots of care in the period of growth, fruiting is achieved in some places other than its native with the help of greenhouses.
Another problem is that the plant is dioecious which means it requires both male and female plant to produce fruit.
This problem cannot be solved artificially and both the male and female plants should be grown in same climatic conditions as in their native region.
