The Crinum lily is related to the Amaryllis plant and bears exotic and fragrant flowers. These plants are beautiful in appearance and are often used to adorn gardens.

The crinum lilies have all the usual characteristics of a typical lily. It has definite "periods" of growth namely,

  • Definite rest period
  • Exact growth period
  • Certain flowering period.

These plants are so beautiful that they are mostly used for decorative purposes. The large blooms take up much space and their sweet fragrance attracts bees, butterflies and small birds. These plants have quite an interesting foliage and growing pattern. Seeing the plant at full bloom is surely a rewarding experience.

    Basic care

These plants grow best when kept in isolation. The blooming time is not fixed. Therefore growers should be on the lookout for flowers all throughout the year.

    Lighting

These plants grow well under bright and direct sunlight. However, the sun should not be so strong as to burn the leaves or the flowers. During very hot summers, the plants could be kept in partial shade or under indirect sunlight.

    Watering

These plants do not follow any special watering pattern. Watering the plants regularly should be enough. However, the soil should not be soggy. When the plant is going through the hibernation stage, they should be watered very lightly.

After the growth stage, watering should be reduced to force the plant into its resting period.

    Soil

These plants need a rich loamy soil with good draining properties. Applying manures is recommended.

    Flowering and foliage

These plants bear beautiful and fragrant flowers. The bulbs of these lilies are quite large and roundish. They can be 12-16 inches in length. Both the bulbs and flowers are quite large and therefore they need more space to grow.

The leaves are long and thin. They are silky to touch and have wavy edges.

    Repotting

The crinum bulbs are quite large. Therefore they need much space to grow. Repotting should be done during the growing stage. This stage begins when the tip of the bulb turns green.

    Fertilizing

A balanced 20-20-20 fertilizer should be fed to the plant monthly.

    Pests and control

These plants are usually immune to invasion by insects. If there are invasions at all by pests like aphids, the plant should be showered with warm water. If this does not work then a natural insecticide can be used.

    Benefits

Crinum lilies are usually used for ornamental purposes.
