Nutmeg is an evergreen perennial that gives us two by-products. Nutmeg and Mace are the outputs. These are used for various purposes in medicine, food, fragrance etc. It needs about 7 years to produce fruits and probably 15 years to produce fruits at full stretch.
It is a low maintenance perennial that needs lots of years to produce useful fruits.
It needs a lot of space to grow and can go up to a height of 100 ft. Water requirement is normal and excess water may ruin the plant.
It is not an indoor type of plant but can be grown in the backyard or in the garden.
Watering should be done normally and requires an annual rainfall of about 150 centimeters. It grows well in humid and warm climatic conditions.
Watering depends upon the climatic conditions as in rainy season water is required less and during summer lots of water is required by the plant.
The best-suited soil for this plant is clay loam, red laterite, and sandy loam and this plant cannot withstand drought.
Soil should be very fertile and the pH level should be maintained between 6.0 to 7.0.

No special care should be taken for lighting purposes as the plant is resistant towards any lighting conditions.
During the early stage of growth, it should be protected from the scorching sun by a shade to prevent the plant from drying.
The flowering usually takes 6-7 years from the date of planting and it cannot be done by artificial means.

The height of the tree can go up to 100 ft and the spread up to 50 ft and more.

A dose of 20 grams of 'N' (45 grams of urea), 20 grams of P2o5 (110 grams of superphosphate) and 50 grams of k20 (80 grams of potash) should be applied during the initial year.
