Polyalthia Longifolia is the scientific name of the false Ashok plant that belongs to the family of Annonaceae and the kingdom of Plantae. It is a large-sized evergreen tree that has symmetrical pyramidal growth. It has the capacity to reduce noise pollution to a great extent.

The false Ashok plant is native to India and Indian Subcontinent. It should not be confused with the original Ashoka plant (Saraca Indica). They resemble each other but these are two different plants belonging to different categories and families all together.

The false Ashok plant is also known as the Buddha Tree, Indian Mast Tree or Indian Fir Tree. It almost looks like the Mediterranean Cypress plant.

Basic Care

It is easy to care for the False Ashok plant. It can be planted in a pot inside the house or in a balcony or terrace. It can also be planted in a garden.

It requires a lot of water, moist soil and good sunlight to thrive and grow. These are the basic requirements that are essential for this plant.

The plant grows best in high temperatures and bright sunny days. It is essentially an evergreen plant with all characteristic traits of the same.

Watering

The False Ashok plant loves bathing in water. A lot of watering is required to grow the plant properly.

The soil should never be allowed to become completely dry between two watering sessions. The plant does not do well in dry conditions

The plant should be watered enough to keep the soil moist throughout, at least during the initial stages of growth.

Soil

As discussed earlier, the soil should be moist. Moist soil helps the plant to grow.

But the soil should also be well-drained. Water should never be allowed to stand at the bottom of the plant for a long time.

The soil should be moist, but not wet. Wet soil can cause damage to the roots of the plant.

Lighting

The False Ashok plant loves sunlight. Bright sunlit days are favourable for proper nourishment of the plant. The plant grows well in Summer.

Full sunlight is essential. Partial shading at times is also essential.

Humidity

The plant prefers a more humid atmosphere. A dry atmosphere is not very favourable for the plant to grow.

Moist soil, as well as moist air is what the plant requires to grow properly.

Fertilization

The False Ashok plant can be fertilized once in a year at least. Organic Plant Fertilizers should be used on such an occasion.

Avoid using Chemical Fertilizers when planting in a garden or in the indoors. Such fertilizers can be pretty harmful.

Fertilizers should be used during late winter through early autumn. This largely increases the chance of the plant growing fully during summer.
