Pony tail palm is scientifically known as Beaucarnea recurvata. It is also known as Nolina or Elephant’s foot. The pony tail palm is a famous house plant that has swollen thick wooden stem at its base to store water. The long thin leaves flow from the top of the plant givind its a fountain type look. Due to its ornamental features and less requirement of basic care it is widely used for decorating homes, hotels and offices.

It is widely grown in homes, offices and hotels owing to its ornamental features.
The plant should always be grown in a humid region else the leaf edges and tips of the plant turn brown.
The plant is a slow grower and growth almost ceases if the plant does not get enough sunlight and water.
To provide good growing conditions, an average temperature of 21 degrees Celsius should be maintained.
The pony tail palm can reach a maximum height of 4.5 metres or 15 feet.
The light requirement of the Pony tail palm is quite low.
It can be placed in a slightly shady place for proper growth.
Water has to be supplied to the plant around once in a week during summer. During winters the plant can be watered around two to three times in a month.
The plant has its swollen trunk as a reservoir of water. But in order to aid growth, the plant must be watered thoroughly.
The plant prefers a soil pH between 6.5 to 7.
Organic fertiliser having equal amounts of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous can be added.
The pony tail palm plant can be fertilised once in every six weeks during spring and summer.
Fertilisation leads to the growth of lush, rich leaves and a very few flowers.
