There are around 10 to11 species of Roystonea. Although, the Cuban royal palm is the famous one. Royal Palms belong to the family of Arecaceae. The trunk is smooth grayish brown in color.

PRUNING

The plant has a self-pruning characteristic. The leaves fall to the ground when they die or turn brown.

This is a tall majestic tree with a single trunk.

BASIC CARE

They are a moderate maintenance plant. It requires special attention and care during their budding season but is independent once they are mature. The plant is too big to be grown in a container.

Royal palms provide a sophisticated look in your driveway.

LIGHTING

Royal Palms can survive frost. They can tolerate a minimum temperature of -3°Cto 46°C. It requires 6 to 7 hours of direct sunlight. The plant can't grow in shade; make sure you provide less sun but not shade.

Royal palm demands a lot of direct sunlight. They need an ample of afternoon sunlight to grow.

SOIL

They can survive high humid conditions. The plant requires humid alluvial soil. They require poor soil conditions but it should be humid in texture.

WATERING

FLOWERING

The fruits of the plant are small dark purple or black in color. There is smaller beige or tan colored seed inside the fruit. The foliage of the plant is like feather fronds.

SIZE

The foliage is about 10 feet long. They are dark green in color with long and sooth crown shaft. The mature height of the plant can grow up to 40 feet.

Sometimes they can grow up to 70 feet. The basal diameter of the trunk can be more than 30 inches.

FERTILIZERS

Feed the royal palms with granular fertilizers which contain potassium and micronutrients in them. If you are feeding the plant with potassium fertilizers then it should be in the sulfur coated form.

You can also feed ammonium salts to the plant; in order to fulfill the nitrogen content in the plant.

Give 8-12-8 magnesium with micronutrients. They require slow releasing boron during their growing period.

BENEFITS

The plant is also known for its religious significance. The plant has a symbolic importance in Palo and Cuba. It cannot be grown indoors; they are best to be grown in your garden with vast open space.

Royal palms can tolerate salt drifts. They can be grown near the salt water.

PESTS

The bark of royal palm is affected by scarab beetles during their blooming period. They devastate the bark of the plant making it hollow. Royal palms are also prone to certain fungal infections.

You can get rid of them by using certain fungicides and pesticides.

Plant the palms around 10 to 12 feet apart in case you are planting it in a row as they the roots of the palms stretch out.
