These are evergreen plants with opposite oblong leaves and which are also glossy and smooth. The leaves too bear a smell like that of turpentine. The flowers are white in colour and bloom in clusters at the tip of the stems. The plants also bear oval black purplish berries which are edible. The antibacterial leaves are used to strengthen the gums and teeth. The seeds and fruits are sour, sweet and acrid.

It is a native plant from the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, Queensland and China. The scientific name of this plant is Syzygium cumini.
