Aloe Vera is a multipurpose plant. These are attractive houseplants with thick and variegated leaves. They can be planted inside the container. The foliage fans out from the center and are broad with spiky edges.

It has varieties of uses from cosmetics to medicinal purposes. The plant is prominently used economically for exporting the gel and foliage.

The common ayurvedic name of the plant is Kathalai.

The botanical name of the aloe vera is Aloe Barbadensis.

BASIC CARE

Aloe Veras are succulents. They do well under dry conditions with moderate rainfall. These are easy to maintain. Use a pot with plenty of drainage holes as they would give more aerated space and would enhance the draining capacity of the soil.

The leaves of the plant are not edible but the gel is useful for various purposes.

PROPAGATION

Aloe veras can be propagated by cuttings and divisions.

Prune the plant once in a week during their blooming season.

LIGHTING

They require bright partial sunlight to grow. Warm weather is suitable for the plant.

It is best to plant them under south or east facing the wall. You can keep them under the afternoon sunlight where it receives direct sunlight for 4 to 6 hours.

SOIL

Plant the aloe vera in a cactus potting soil mix. Aloe veras are amazing succulents; hence they require cacti mix with additional perlite and a well-draining potting mix.

SIZE

The average height of the plant is around 1 to 2 feet.

WATERING

Let the soil dry out between the watering. Water the plant with 4 to 5 cups of water alternately. The soil should be moist in texture but should drain well.

The plant cannot tolerate stagnant water.

FLOWERING

It is rare that the plant bears flowers. In case they are bearing it then they must be light yellowish white in color. They bloom in summer up to 90 cm tall.

FERTILIZERS

Fertilize the Aloe Vera routinely during the spring. They do not need to be fertilized throughout the year.

Use phosphorous-heavy-water based fertilizer which is in diluted form.

PESTS

Aloe Vera is prone to mealy bugs and scales. The symptom that the plant is affected with scale includes sticky sap with black fungus around the area.

Use insecticidal soap or Neem oil to cure the plant. For greater results, spray insecticides once in a week for a month.

Make sure you allow the water to drain and supply a limited amount of water as the plant is water sensitive. They may die if the draining of water has not happened properly
