Cactus plants are easy to maintain and great if you're a beginner to gardening.
Cacti are flowering plants from the Cactaceae family. Cacti are known to store water and survive in extremely hot and dry habitat. They don't have leaves like the other plants. It has been estimated that there are more than 2000 species of cactus all around the world.
Once established, cactus is one of the hardiest plants. It can be grown easily even by a beginner gardener.
Cactus plant requires abundant bright sunlight for healthy growth especially in the winter months. In the summer strong direct sunlight can scorch the plant so it might be a good idea to move them to a sheltered region during the afternoon.
So cactus plant can be either desert cacti or forest cacti. Desert cacti are the traditional cacti and are usually covered with spines and often grow in paddles, balls or obelisks. Forest cacti on the other hand mostly don't have spines. Both the varieties have beautiful blooms and interesting foliage with their unique stems and leaf substitutes.
Water the plant regularly during the spring and summer months. Do not over-water however. A good tip is to wait for the topsoil layer to dry and then water again. During the winter months, you can cut back on watering. Water when the plant begins to shrivel.
Cactus prefers a rich, well-drained, well-aerated soil. The soil needs to be rich in humus and moist. Mix in organic content like compost to make it more nutrient rich. A layer of mulch will help maintain soil moisture.
Average height of the cactus plant is about 10 to 15 cm.
Fertilize with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season. Regular fertilizing will lead to better growth. Some varieties might show better results with specialized fertilizers. Water the plant before fertilizing to prevent fertilizer burn.
The plant might get infested with common bugs like mealy bugs and spider mites. Spray the plant with an organic insecticidal spray like neem oil.
It is mostly grown as an ornamental plant. It is the perfect plant for hanging baskets. It does not require much care and adds an exotic, tropical look to your house or office with its uniquely shaped foliage and beautiful large showy blooms.
