Cissus Quadrangularis or Adamant Creeper, Asthisamharaka, Hadjod, Pirandai, Patah Tulang is a perennial grapevine native to India, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka. It used in various Ayurvedic medicines to heal broken bones, ligaments and tendons; hence the name Hadjod. In Hindi "had" means bones and "jod" means joining.
The plant can be easily grown in containers or hanging baskets. It is easy to care for.
The plant can grow in full sun or semi-shade. Plant it in an area where it will receive at least a few hours of sunlight.
It has a quadrangular four-winged stem with fleshy three-lobed leaves. The flowers are greenish white in colour . Flowering season is mostly in summer. Sometimes it might have red coloured fruits. Prune the plant if you observe the vines going rampant.
Water deeply but let the soil visually dry between waterings. Ideally water the plant in the mornings. Vines usually do not prefer heavy watering regularly and same is the case with Hadjod.
The ideal soil should be well-drained, rich in organic content with a pH of about 6 to 7.5. A thick layer of mulch will help retain moisture in the soil, keep it cool during summer and relatively warm during winter and also prevent weeds.
The plant reaches an average height of about 8cm to 10cm. The plant likes to spread. The size of the plant depends on the size of the container; it can grow quite large in size in bigger containers. You can control the size by pruning.
Fertilize once in a month or biweekly with a balanced fertilizer. Add a lot of organic content like compost and manure while planting.
The plant can get infested by mealy bugs and root disease. To prevent this from happening, take proper care of the plant, water cautiously and make sure the soil is well-drained. Use organic fungicides and pesticides if the problem persists.
Almost all parts of the plant have medicinal properties. Leaves and stem are dried and powdered to be added in various ayurvedic medicines which help in bone healing and strengthening. Chutney prepared from aerial parts of the plant helps in digestion and weight loss. It is also said to help with respiratory disorders and diabetes prevention.
