BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Clerodendrum Inerme belongs to family Verbenaceae is very widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The plant is now known as Volkameria inermis. It is found throughout the coastal region in India on the edges of mangrove forests, in saline marshes, swamps and tidal mud.


BASIC CARE

The plant does not need a lot of attention. It is quite hardy and can easily be grown in your garden.

LIGHTING

Place the plant in a sunny location where it can showcase its best colors.  It is a sun-loving plant and can grow in full sun to partial shade.

FLOWERING

The plant produces cymes of beautiful, fragrant, white colored flowers with long purple stamens arising in between five corolla lobes. Flowering season is in winter. Sometimes the plant has small fleshy, blackish fruits. The plant is very tolerant to pruning and you can give it any shape you want.

WATERING

Water when the soil looks dry. Regular watering is not required. Ideally water the plant in the mornings. It can bear slight waterlogged conditions too.

SOIL

Provide a well-draining soil in a container with drainage holes to stimulate its growth. Fertile loamy soils could be used. The plant can grow in marshes too so it does not have very specific soil preferences. It can be grown in slightly salty soils too. Prune the plant occasionally to maintain the glory of it.

SIZE

The average height of the plant ranges from 2m to 3m. If grown as a climber it can reach up to 13m.

FERTILIZERS

The plant is not a big feeder but fertilizing can lead to better blooms. Fertilize the plant during the flowering season once a month. Water the plant before fertilizing.

The plant is quite hardy and does not have any major pests or diseases. It can occasionally get infested with caterpillars. Spray them off with water or soap solution.
