Cloves are flower buds of the clove tree prominently used as a spice. The common name of the plant is Syzygium aromaticum. They belong to the family of Myrtaceae. The plant is native to Indonesia and is commercially grown in various parts of Asia.

BASIC CARE

Cloves are easy to grow and a medium maintenance plant. Although they are slow growing but can live for many years. Cloves can be propagated by seeds and cuttings.

If you are propagating it from the seeds then sow the harvested seeds which are not completely dried out for germination.

WATERING

Water the cloves regularly. They require a medium amount of water.

Let the soil dry out completely between the watering. As they are grown in wet tropical regions they require 2 to 3 cups of water on an average.

SOIL

The soil should be rich in organic matter.

A well-draining soil with humus texture will also stimulate the growth of the cloves.

Try to maintain the loamy texture of the soil to enhance the humidity of the soil.

LIGHTING

Cloves require subtropical climate to grow. They require a temperature between 20°C to 30°C to stimulate their growth. They can't tolerate frost, so do not plant it under harsh winters. They require partial sunlight to grow.

SIZE

The mature height of the plant is around 9 to 14 m.

FERTILIZERS

Apply manure or fish meal once in a year. You can feed the clove with organic fertilizer during the rainy season. You can also feed the plant with superphosphate once in a month when the plant gets mature.

FLOWERING

The flowers are usually crimson in color and are in the form of clusters. It has four to five sepals with a long calyx. They usually bloom during the summer - especially in April. The plant is absolutely perfect for spreading fragrance and colors.

BENEFITS

Cloves are used widely in the culinary and medical purposes. They are used in the manufacturing of toothpaste, detergents and mouth wash as they are an antiseptic.

They have healing properties. It is said that they can cure indigestion and dyspepsia.

Cloves suffer from scales and seedling wilt. Use essential pesticides and fungicides to get get rid of them. The plant is usually affected with downy mildew and fungus blights. Fungal leaf spots and aphids also affect the growth of the plan
