Cupressus Golden is an evergreen coniferous tree native to the Central coast of California. The botanical name epithet macrocarpa means 'with large fruit'.
Although it is an outdoor plant, with proper care, sunlight and timely pruning, it can be grown as a houseplant too.
The plant should be grown in full sun. At least 4-5 hours of sunlight is must otherwise the plant will lose its bright colouration. Low light for an extended period of time might even kill the plant.
The foliage is two-toned with a yellowish green colour. The needles of the plant give off a lemony scent when you run your fingers through them. It starts as a cone-shaped plant and grows to a more columnar shape.
However, you can prune it to give it the desired shape but don't prune it too harshly as that may leave bare spots. Sometimes the plant bears brownish fruits.
Water abundantly so that it reaches the root-ball they wait for the topsoil to dry out before watering again. The plant prefers an evenly moist soil. Don't let the soil dry out completely as that may lead to the needles of the plant becoming crunchy and dry. Plants grown indoors will require more frequent watering. Be careful that the plant is not allowed to sit in waterlogged conditions.
Sandy or loamy soils that drain well should be used. Also, apply a layer of mulch over the soil to prevent weeds and keep the soil moist.
It can grow up to 40m in ideal growing conditions and achieves a trunk diameter of about 2.5m. It will be smaller when grown in a container about 5ft to 6ft. You can prune the roots to control its size.
The plant is not a very big feeder. Too much fertilizing can lead to faster but thinner growth. Just a one-time application of a balanced fertilizer during spring should be enough. Use an organic fertilizer
Aphids can be a problem and may damage the plant severely if not controlled early on. Use an organic insecticide, neem oil etc.
It can be used as a hedge plant or screen plant. Many people decorate the plant and use it as a Christmas tree. It has beautiful two-toned yellowish-green foliage which makes it a perfect addition of green to your house.
