Dragon fruit plant goes by various names like Buah Naga, Belle of the night, Cactus fruit, Ajgar phal etc. They are native to the regions of Asia, Mexico and certain parts of South America.

BASIC CARE

Being a fruit-bearing plant, dragon fruits require a certain level of maintenance during their growing season. They can reach up to the height of 25 feet and more.

TYPES

Dragon fruit is a climber, they need a support to grow properly. These are the subtropical plant.

There are three types of dragon fruit. They are: Hylocereus Megalanthus (white fruit flesh with yellow shell)

Hylocereus costaricensis (red shell and flesh) and Hylocereus Undatus(white flesh and red shell).

WATERING

Dragon fruits are a cactus plant, so make sure you water the plant properly.

Check the top layer of the soil, if it is dry in touch then water the plant with 2 to 3 cups of water. Don't overwater the plant. They require moist soil and not soaked.

SOIL

Slightly acidic soil is required by the plant. The ph level should be between six and seven. Well-draining soil should be used for the plant. Sandy soil could be the substitute for the plant.

LIGHTING

Dragon fruits require direct sunlight to grow. They cannot tolerate frost and cold climates. They require an average temperature of 45°F to have a healthy growth. Afternoon sunlight is best for the plant.

FLOWERING

One of the distinctive features of the flower is that they open only for one night. The flowers are usually white in color.The blooming of the flowers occurs from July to October.

The fruits are usually green in color until they ripe. The inside pulp of the fruit is filled with lots of small seeds, resembling Kiwi.

BENEFITS

It is believed that dragon fruits are helpful in boosting the immune system as they are rich in vitamin C. The fruit is often used in jams and ice creams.

PROPAGATION

Dragon fruit can be propagated directly from the seeds or from the cuttings. Separate the seeds from the flesh and plant them in the germinating tray. It may take around 12 to 15 days for the plant to germinate. Then you can shift the plant into the pot.

If you decide to grow the dragon fruit from the cuttings, then grow it during the month of summer. Cut a six inch of the cactus segment and allow them to dry. Then place it inside two inches of thick soil. Propagation may take around three to four weeks.

FERTILIZERS

Feed the plant with cacti mix once in every month to stimulate its growth. Avoid feeding the dragon fruit plant during the winters.

PESTS

Dragon Fruit plant is affected by Dragon spots, which infect on the stems and leaves of the plant.

The plants are prone to mealy bugs and aphids. They feed on the sweet sap of the plant. Various ants and aphids also affect the health of the plant.
