Ficus Elastica is a tropical plant from the genus fig, native to north-east India, China and Indonesia. It is grown around the world as an ornamental plant. Latex from the plant was earlier used for making rubber.
It is perhaps one of easiest to grow houseplant. As long as it receives abundant water, it can grow in low light conditions too. Also, remember it is poisonous if consumed by pets or humans.
Rubber plant grows best in bright, filtered light. You can grow it near a window with a sheer curtain. Make sure it's sheltered from hot afternoon light.
Rubber plant has thick, shiny, oval-shaped leaves which can be either green, variegated green or burgundy in colour. The flowers are inconspicuous and the fruit is a yellow-green oval. Growing season starts in late spring or early summer.
Water it deeply once a week then wait for the top layer to dry out before watering again. You can cut back on watering during the winter months. Mist the leaves when the weather gets too dry. Do not over-water. Letting the plant sit in boggy conditions will expose it to root-rot and other fungal diseases.
Rubber plant prefers a well-aerated, well-drained soil. Soil should also be rich in nutrients. You can use a peat-moss based potting mix. Soil should be slightly towards the acidic side. A layer of mulch over the soil will help keep it moist.
As a houseplant, it grows up to 8 to 10 inches. It grows larger in the garden. You can prune the plant to maintain its size.
Use a balanced liquid fertilizer once in early spring and again in late summer. Do not over-fertilize because that could be harmful to the plant. Also, don't forget to water the plant before fertilizing to prevent fertilizer burn.
Common bugs like mealy bugs, spider mites and scale can affect the plant. Be vigilant and take action immediately. Spray the plant with organic insecticidal spray and neem oil. Overwatering can make rubber plant susceptible to diseases.
You can easily grow them indoors and add a beautiful focal point to any room. It is also known to remove toxins from the air.
