The leaves form rosettes that resemble the shape of a clamshell and are stacked like pancakes earning them the name Flapjack. The plant is adorned with fragrant yellow tubular flowers in early spring.
Kalanchoe flapjack plant is known to have excellent drought tolerance so you need not water regularly. But it is still not advisable to let the soil go completely dry. For best results, water when the topsoil feels dry and keep the soil evenly moist. Do not over-water. Standing in water-logged conditions can cause root-rot in the plant.
You can use sandy or loamy soil. Make sure that the soil is well-drained. Enrich the soil with organic material like compost or manure. Add a layer of mulch over the soil to maintain even temperatures. The container used should have appropriate drainage holes.
The plant grows about 10 to 14 inches in height.
The plant does not require constant feeding. You can feed the plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer reduced to half its strength during the flowering season. Cut back on fertilizing in the winter. Water the plant before fertilizing.
Although the plant usually remains free form pests, it can sometimes be susceptible to scale, mealy bugs and mites. Treat with appropriate organic pesticides immediately. Root-rot and powdery mildew can occur in the plant due to over-watering so be cautious while watering.
