BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Kalanchoe Flapjack is a tropical succulent plant native to South Africa. It is known for its unique foliage.

BASIC CARE

Kalanchoe flapjack is easy to care for and does not require any special attention. It is perfect for a laid-back gardener.

LIGHTING

The plant grows best in bright, filtered light. You can grow it near a window with a sheer curtain. It is better to plant it in a sheltered region where it'll receive abundant sunlight while being protected from harsh afternoon rays.

FLOWERING

The plant has fleshy paddle shaped leaves hence the common name paddle plant. The leaves are grayish-green in color with red margins covered with a white powdery bloom. The leaves form rosettes that resemble the shape of a clamshell and are stacked like pancakes earning them the name Flapjack. The plant is adorned with fragrant yellow tubular flowers in early spring.

WATERING

Kalanchoe flapjack plant is known to have excellent drought tolerance so you need not water regularly. But it is still not advisable to let the soil go completely dry. For best results, water when the topsoil feels dry and keep the soil evenly moist. Do not over-water. Standing in water-logged conditions can cause root-rot in the plant.

SOIL

You can use sandy or loamy soil. Make sure that the soil is well-drained. Enrich the soil with organic material like compost or manure. Add a layer of mulch over the soil to maintain even temperatures. The container used should have appropriate drainage holes.

SIZE

The plant grows about 10 to 14 inches in height.

FERTILIZERS

The plant does not require constant feeding. You can feed the plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer reduced to half its strength during the flowering season. Cut back on fertilizing in the winter. Water the plant before fertilizing.

PESTS

Although the plant usually remains free form pests, it can sometimes be susceptible to scale, mealy bugs and mites. Treat with appropriate organic pesticides immediately. Root-rot and powdery mildew can occur in the plant due to over-watering so be cautious while watering.

BENEFITS

The plant is mainly grown as an ornamental plant. It can be grown in the garden or indoors in a container. It is perfect for both homes and offices since it requires little care. It can be grown in a rock garden too. It gives a unique tropical look wherever it is grown.
