Ground orchids are beautiful plants which grow in the soil unlike most other orchids. Spathoglottis ground orchid is a terrestrial orchid. These plants grow well in warm climates but can be grown in other climates too with proper care. These ground orchids bear beautiful flowers which are a real pleasure to the eyes.
These plants adorn the garden with brightly coloured flowers throughout the growing season. They are not too difficult to grow. However, if the climate is not warm then the plants need special care to thrive. Although, the sight of the orchids in bloom is totally worth the effort.
As mentioned before, the plants are used to grow in the warm climates of central or southern Florida. Therefore, if they are being grown in colder climates they are going to need more care. It is advisable to grow them in containers so that they can be brought inside or outside depending upon the fall or rise in temperature.
The orchids do not give much trouble as far as exposure to sunlight is concerned. They can tolerate both partial shade and partial sunlight.
However, the orchids are very sensitive of the temperature around them. Usually, the temperature be 26-27 degrees Celsius. At night, they can survive temperatures up to 10 degrees Celsius.
Watering is very crucial for the growth of the ground orchids. The plants must be watered thoroughly at least twice a week. However the plant cannot stand waterlogged soil. Therefore, the soil should be allowed to dry between watering sessions. In warm or breezy areas, the plant must be watered more.
Orchids can be grown in ordinary orchid mixes or in a mixture of orchid mix with soilless potting mix.
The orchids need regular fertilizing. They should be fed with a timed-release orchid food every 4-6 months.
These plants grow to a height of 2 feet.
These plants prefer not to have their roots disturbed. Therefore, it is not a good idea to repot the plant. If done all, the repotting should be done infrequently and with great care.
These plants bear bright and gorgeous flowers which serve ornamental purposes.
