Heliconia Stricta Dwarf is one of the species of the Birds-of-paradise plant. Dwarf Jamaican is one of the smallest Heliconia. These plants are also called as Christmas rose, winter rose or Heliconia Stricta Bucky.

They belong to the family of Heliconiaceae. Heliconia is native to Central America, the Caribbean islands, South America, and some of the islands of the South Pacific.

BASIC CARE

Heliconia Stricta Dwarf plants are easy to grow and are a low maintenance plant. The plant is appropriate to grow in the containers or indoors. These dwarf plants and are compact in nature and are a long blooming plant. They require plenty of moisture to grow. You can propagate them by dividing rhizomes or by bulbs and corms.

HEIGHT

The average height of the dwarf plant is around 0.5m. The average space required by the plant is around 12 inches.

LIGHTING

The plant prefers partial shade and not direct sunlight. They should be grown in full sun but not under direct and bright exposure to sunlight. The ideal temperature required by the plant is from 25°C to 35°C.

WATERING

Water them with 2 to 3 cups of water daily, especially during the summer season. Although make sure that the soil does not get soggy.

SOIL

The plant requires moist soil which is rich in nutrients. They require soil with ph value ranging from 5.6 to 7.5 i.e they prefer mildly acidic soil. Let 2 to 3 inches of the topsoil dry out before the next watering. Grow the dwarf plant where the soil is highly humid in nature. You can also add compost or organic peat humus into the pot. Make sure you add organic manure into the soil before repotting.

FERTILIZERS

Feed the plant with potassium-rich granular fertilizer 3 to 4 times in a year. During their blooming season feed them regularly with liquid fertilizer so that they bloom abundantly. Make sure you prune the plant around once to twice in a week.

FLOWERING

Heliconia Stricta Dwarf are one of the best pot plants. The flowers are bright red in color with the foliage of dark green in color. They bloom during autumn. The leaves of the plant resemble banana leaves. They look interesting and magnificent. The flowers attract a lot of bees and butterflies and are good for cutting.
