Brief Description

A native to the tropical regions of America and Africa, this genus includes herbaceous plants and shrubs.

These are perennial flowering plant and do great as a groundcover plant, in a frost-free climate.

Basic Care

Newly planted lantanas require frequent watering but once established they require little maintenance and fairly bare dry conditions.

Cut the tips of the plant periodically to encourage blooming.

Regular pruning is suggested in the spring season.

Overgrown plants can be bounced back to life by cutting a third of their growth.

Watering

The freshly germinated seedlings require a lot of water but once established, this plant is fairly drought tolerant.

They are generally pretty adaptable but it is suggested that enough water should be provided to keep the soil moistened.

Keep the soil moist consistently for at least first two months.

Soil

These plants are usually tolerant to all types of soil conditions but it is preferred to keep the soil pH slightly acidic for ideal growth.

This plant grows best in a well-drained soil.

If you're using compost, it is suggested you amend heavy clay or sand with it.

They are salt tolerant.

Lighting

The lantana plant prefers full sun. They grow abundantly in warm temperature.

Fertilizer

It isn't required, but lantana plants can be given a light dose of a balanced organic fertiliser each spring and summer.

Do not over fertilize as it shall inhibit overall flowering in the plant.

Size

It grows 1-2 ft long and 3 ft wide.

Flowering

This plant is known for its rounded cluster of bright reddish and orange flowers.

These attract a lot of butterflies, even hummingbirds.

They bloom throughout the year.

Diseases

This plant may catch powdery mildew, especially if it's kept in shade.

The plant may develop root rot, if it is kept too wet, hence avoid overwatering.

Whitefly infestation may lead to the development of sooty mold which causes black decolorization of leaves.

Lace bugs cause the foliage to turn grey and fall off.

Medicinal Uses

It has been used in traditional herbal medicines for treating cancer, skin itches, chicken pox, measles asthma, and ulcers.
