The lemon (Hindi: nimbu) or the Citrus limon is a species of small evergreen tree native to Asia.

Though it's not exactly an indoor plant, growing a lemon tree in your home can be a satisfying and aromatic experience.

Basic Care

Potted lemon trees do not grow as large as those on the ground but their needs are almost similar.

The pot should have drainage holes at the base as the trees need good drainage. It is also advisable to keep the pot slightly elevated from the ground.

The soil should be kept free from grass and weeds. Mulch can be applied in a ring for this purpose as well as to retain moisture. Do not mulch right up to the trunk as it can induce rot.

Watering

The soil should be kept moist throughout the growing season.Ideally, the plant should be watered 2-3 times a week and daily in very hot weather. The soil should be moist but not soggy.

Soil

The soil should have good drainage properties. Deep soils with pH range 5.5-7.5 are ideal though light soils with good drainage also work well.

Lighting

These trees grow well in the sun and can endure temperatures ranging from 20-40 degrees Celsius. Therefore they should be kept in the sunniest part of the garden or balcony.

In case of cold temperatures, the trees should be brought inside an enclosed porch.

Size

A potted lemon tree grows up to 2-6 inches. Lemon trees in the ground tend to grow a little taller.

Fertilizer

Citrus plants need more nitrogen than phosphorus or potassium (at least 2:1:1 ratio).

The Miracid Soil Acidifier is water soluble and works well as a fertilizer.

Pest Control

Potted Lemon trees should be protected mainly against ants. Ant baits containing Boric Acid is helpful.

In case of insects like scales, aphids or mites, a mixture of water and mild dish soap can be used.

Benefits

The fruit from these trees is widely used in the kitchen. The zest, pulp, rind etc is used in baking and its juice is a popular drink.

The lemon juice is also tonifies and purifies the liver.
