Ostrich Ferm is a variety fern plant belonging to the Polypodiopsida family and has neither seeds nor flowers.
Ferns are tropical plant native to the rain-forests. They are perhaps one of the oldest plants on the earth. They come in about 10,000 different species.
Ferns are easy to care for. Once established they don't require any special care. You can easily grow them in a container or in the garden.
Ferns prefer filtered sunlight. They should be protected from hot direct sunlight. When growing indoors place them near a north-facing window and turn the pot frequently to ensure an even growth. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves. Cool to average warmth is ideal.
Most ferns are known for their attractive foliage. They have pinnate leaves in shades of green.
Water the plant regularly since a moist soil is preferable. Check the soil to make sure it's never dry. Water it along the sides to prevent water logging in the centre. Don't overwater.
Humidity should be kept high. You can use a humidifier or keep the plant in a tray of water and pebbles.
Rich loose soil with a lot of organic content. Peat or humus based soil is ideal. A thick layer of mulch in the soil around the base of the plant can help maintain humidity.
The size of the plant will depend on the variety of the fern and the size of the container it is grown in. Usually they reach about 2 to 3 feet in height when grown indoors.
The plant does not need a lot of fertilizer but if you see the leaves losing their colour and glossiness then it would be a good choice to use some. Weakly fertilize once a month during the summer. Fertilizers will encourage new growth but overfertilizing can lead to yellowing of leaves so be careful.
Although usually the plants remain free from pests and diseases, aphids, mealy bugs and caterpillars can sometimes affect the plants. Use appropriate insecticides and pesticides. If you observe the fronds turning brown then that could be a sign of overwatering or improper ventilation.
It is used mainly as an ornamental plant and makes for a spectacular focal plant. They can grow well without too much sunlight and are an ideal choice for indoor plants. You can plant it on the patio or in the shaded regions of the garden. It can be used as a ground cover too.
