Brief Description

Plumeria plant species are variously indigenous to Mexico, Polynesia, Central America, The Caribbean, Brazil but are also grown as cosmopolitan ornamental plants in warmer regions.

Commonly known as frangipani, most species are deciduous shrubs or small trees.

These plants are famous for their flowers which are used to make floral garlands.

Plumeria trees bloom in a variety of different colours (Yellow, Red, White, Pink)

Basic Care

Plumeria trees are tropical and therefore require conditions at least approximating tropical/subtropical in order to flourish.

While transplanting, make sure the hole made in the soil is twice the size of the root ball.

Place a small amount of E.B. Stone Blood meal in the bottom of the hole and incorporate soil.

It is suggested that the top of the original root ball is kept 1 inch above the surface of the soil.

These plants can also be propagated by seeds or by cuttings leafless stem tips in spring, with cuttings being the easiest and most preferred method. Cuttings are allowed to dry at the base before planting.

Prune them in any shape, though they require very little pruning. Don't prune a lot otherwise it may affect the flowering.

These plants are sensitive to cold and must be protected when the temperature falls.

Watering

Don't water if the soil is moist.

More water may be required for plumerias growing in containers, but don't overwater or the trunks will rot.

Reduce watering in the mid-fall and don't water at all during winter as the plant is dormant.

Resume regular watering as new plants grow in spring.

Soil

Plumeria plants cannot tolerate poorly drained soil.

Make sure that the soil is moist, fertilized and well drained.

Fertilizer

The Plumeria plants need to be fertilized in about every 2-3 weeks d their growing season.

Use a fertilizer which is rich in phosphorus.

Avoid excessive nitrogen as it will encourage foliage growth and reduce flowering.

Lighting

Plumeria plant grows best in full sun. They may grow equally good in indirect sunlight depending on the temperature of the region they are planted in.

Exposure to direct sunlight even for half day yields good blooms.

Size

These plants grow to a height of 1.5 to 2.5 meters.

Flowering

The plant yield green flowers from spring through fall which is highly fragrant.

These flowers stand out nicely amid the large-leaved foliage, which may be evergreen or deciduous.
