A brazilian native, this plant also goes by the name scarlet sage or red salva.
They mostly grow in warm, humid areas. They are perennial plants that produce beautiful flowering plants.
The plants usually stands 3ft tall and has a spread of about half a feet.
Although scarlets are perennial plants (long lasting), these are planted as annual in cold areas as they don't last harsh winters.
Scarlet plants are fairly easy to care for.
Watering requirements of the plant depends upon the weather. Trial and error is often the best way to figure out the plants watering needs.
Pinch off dead flowers spike to help the plant bloom better and brighter in the coming weeks.
Fertilise the plant with high nitrogen fertilisers in the spring and fall.
Salvia Splendens are considered a drought tolerant herb.
In a rainy climate, these plants can be watered once in two days. In hot summers, water regularly. In hot climates like in Delhi, water daily.
Water retention gels around the plant can help the plant retain water in the summer.
When watering salivas water two or three times and a few minutes apart. Also, avoid watering at night. Also preferably, water in the morning.
Overwatering can lead to root rotting, especially in potted plants.
Salvia plants require well drained soil.
Avoid thick waterlogging soil, they lead to the plants roots rotting.
Ideally, use a potting mix of soil, coco peat and some compost. If you are placing them on ground, surround them with a ring of this potting mix.
Also, avoid planting them in alkaline soil.
Salvia splendens need an average amount of sun to bloom.
Salvias have an affinity for scorching sun. If you happened live in an area with scorching sun like Jaipur, keep the plant away from direct sun.
These plants bloom in part-shade too and fade in hard sun.
If the plant's growth slows down due to low sun, keep them in bright sunlight (obviously) or add ammonium mixed with water.
The best pH level for this plant is around 6.
It takes about 6-7 weeks for the plant to fully bloom.
The flower is bright and easily stands out. Salvia flower measures around 2-3 inches in height.
Flowers grow on the same stem as the foliage.
If the flower dies out, make sure to cut it off from far down the stems to make sure the flower blooms better.
These plants grow to a height of 20-25 inches with a flower of 3 inches in height.
Make sure to fertilise twice a year, in spring and in autumn.
Use soluble fertiliser mixed with water to fertilise the plants.
If you over fertilise, you'll notice signs of weak growth and the plant will not produce flowers.
Also throw in some generic (all purpose) fertilisers mixed with the top layer of the soil.
