Schefflera is a common houseplant originated from the rainforests of Australia. They belong to Araliaceae family.
Schefflera is popular as a houseplant because of its exotic foliage. They are native to the rainforests and gallery forests of Australia, New Guinea, and Java. But these plants are often seen in offices or gardens because they are easy to grow.
Though Schefflera is quite a tolerant plant, It needs balanced lighting and watering. Since it is desirable in indoor spaces, lighting should be kept in mind as too much or too less of it can destroy the foliage and eventually the plant.
These plants need a medium amount of light. They enjoy a bright light but it should be indirect. Too little sunlight makes the plants leggy while too much direct sunlight burns the delicate leaves.
The watering sessions should be such that the soil gets a chance to dry before the second watering. After the soil dries, water until the soil is fully soaked. Overwatering might result in yellowing of leaves and will ultimately kill the plant.
Scheffleras are not fussy about the soil type. Ideally, a soil with good drainage capacities should be used.
The plant needs to be pruned when it gets leggy due to insufficient light. Simply cutting off the overgrown parts will be sufficient.
Fertilizers are not really needed for these plants. A half-solution water-soluble fertilizer can be used once a year.
Schefflera plants are poisonous if eaten. They are not fatal, but they cause burning sensation, swelling, difficulty in swallowing and also difficulty in breathing.
Spider-mites and mealybugs are the most common pests that attack these plants. Washing the infested areas with soapy water can be effective. The plant may also suffer from root rot. The gardener should take care not to water the plants too much in this case.
These plants typically grow to a height of 10-15 feet.
These plants rarely bear flowers in temperate regions. But in warmer regions, Schefflera produces long showy flowers with small flowers emerging from the middle. These flowers are red, white or pink depending on the species.
It is used for ornamental purposes. It is a great addition to Indoor Landscaping in office spaces and houses.
