Sedeveria is a quite low maintenance plant and hence easy to grow even for beginners.
The plant can be grown in full sun or partial shade. In hotter regions, afternoon shade is recommended. It is best to grow the plant in a sheltered region where it receives at least 6 to 7 hours of sunlight. Morning sunlight is best for the plant.
Sedeveria plant has delicate, pale almost silvery green leaves that grow densely on a short stem forming a rosette of a sort. The older leaves might even be hairy. Leaves are also known to turn slightly reddish in the sun. Sometimes whitish pink flowers grace the plant in spring.
The plant does not require frequent watering. Watering once or twice a week should be enough. Check that the topsoil is dry before watering again. The plant is quite drought resistant but don't let it go dry for a very long time.
The plant does not have any specific soil preferences. Just make sure that the soil is well-drained. Enrich the soil with organic material like compost or manure. Add a layer of mulch over the soil to maintain even temperatures. The container used should have appropriate drainage holes.
The plant grows up to 8 to 10 inches tall. You can prune the plant to promote new growth.
Use a liquid fertilizer rich in potassium once in two weeks during the flowering season i.e. early spring to summer. Fertilizing will promote better growth.
Mealybugs affect the plant by feeding on the lender leaves. Use rubbing alcohol to get rid of them. Follow up with appropriate insecticides. Use organic insecticides.
Sedeveria is a very hardy plant and can thrive in conditions most plants don't. You can use it fill up those empty bare, too-sunny or too-shady places in your garden. It is perfect for a rock garden too.
