Ficus is an evergreen, flowering tree from the family Moraceae native, to Asia and Australia. It is the national plant of Bangkok.
Weeping fig grows slowly so does not require frequent re-potting. You only need to care about the basic needs like lighting and watering. Don't move the plant frequently.
Choose a region where it'll receive abundant sunlight while being protected from harsh afternoon rays. While the plant loves lots of bright light, day-time rays should be avoided to prevent leaf scorch.
It has large arching branches with long pointed glossy leaves. Leaves are usually green sometimes they can be variegated. The plant rarely flowers and fruits. Growing season is spring.
Water it when the top of the soil feels dry. Keep the soil fairly moist but do not ever over-water. Over-watering can make the soil boggy which would lead the plant to drop leaves. Also do not let the soil to dry out completely.
Use a well-drained, loose soil. Soil should be rich in nutrients. You can add humus or other organic content like manure or compost for the same. A layer of mulch over the soil will help keep it moist and maintain temperature.
As a houseplant the plant usually grows up to 3ft to 10ft. It's known to grow quite large in the garden with proper care. In natural conditions it grows up to 30m.
Feed with regularity during the growing season. Young Ficus plants require fertilizing once in two weeks. Use a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted by half. You can cut back on fertilizing during the winter months. Always water the plant before fertilizing to prevent fertilizer burn.
Unlike most figs, weeping fig is resistant to leaf thrips. Sometimes the plant can get affected by scale. Use organic insecticides like neem oil. Take care while watering as the plant is susceptible to root-rot.
The plant can be used as a hedge or as a privacy screen. It can easily be grown indoors in a container. It is used mostly as an ornamental plant. You can braid its trunks to give it a decorative look.
